Dispatch from Sampson says Hobson and seven men are safe in Santiago four miles from Morro. Navy expects bombardment of Morro today and notes relief eases risk to Hobson crew during the assault on Santiago fortifications.
Information from Washington reports Spaniards driven back from Basquiri woods as 25 Spanish dead and 50 wounded are found in positions taken by Shafter's army since landing. Not one American killed. Cubans drive Spaniards toward Santiago amid fierce guerrilla fighting.
The Matanzas mule Blanco, famed in Cuba, received a full military funeral days after Matanzas bombardment. Spaniards mourned the animal as a hero akin to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, with tears from onlookers. First Officer Smalles of the Myrtle Dene brought the report.
In Madrid the chamber of deputies reconvened after a suspended sitting. Romero Robledo urged direct negotiations with the United States for peace, warning brokers would seek commissions. Aunon attacked newspaper representatives, Salmeron pressed to continue debate, Sagasta clashed with him, and a secret session was ordered on internal affairs.
On June 23 24 American forces under Gen Lawtons brigade of about 4000 moved west along the coast to Jaragua and occupied the town. About 1000 Spanish troops under General Linares evacuated. The town was not burned though an arson attempt appears to have been made. Some Cuban skirmishing occurred with retreating troops and several Cubans were wounded. American troops at Juragua have been reinforced after a delayed landing.
Sir Thomas Lipton attended a flag raising at his Chicago packing house. He climbed the roof to hoist the American flag before the workers and spoke of liberty, pledging the flag will not be lowered until U S. forces prevail in Cuba. He urged three cheers for Old Glory.
In a letter from Secretary Long to Assistant Naval Constructor Hobson he commends his heroism in sinking the Merrimac at Santiago harbor. The note lauds readiness for emergency resourcefulness and extraordinary bravery and says Hobson is held in grateful remembrance by his country and admired by the civilized world. The letter will reach Hobson and the Santiago prisoners at the first opportunity.
New York June 24. Following Governor Bloxham of Florida and a war secretary suggestion, orders prescribe that America shall be performed by army bands alone and not in medleys or with variations. Soldiers must uncover when national anthems sound, a practice incompatible with medley arrangements.
A Rome dispatch to London reports the Austrian steamer Zriun loaded a large torpedo supply at Fiume and set course for Suez to join the Spanish squadron in the Mediterranean.
Washington reports Adjutant General Corbin expects news of a great battle at any hour as skirmishing continues day and night. Officials believe Spain will make its strongest stand near Santiago close to Cervera's fleet guns while direct cables indicate no major engagement yet. Santiago bay defenses silenced and reinforcements cut off, the city seems doomed.
An engine pulling a Torrey cowboy regiment train jumped the track near Union station in St. Joseph MO. Engineer Fuller died instantly while Fireman Christian was fatally scalded. Cowboys aboard were unharmed. Three cars derailed carrying horses, none injured.
Kingston Jamaica June 24. Gen Shafter's aides predict Santiago will fall within ten days. Spanish forces remain strong near the city and refuse to be drawn out while awaiting the American assault.
The June 24 consecration at Cleveland Ohio of Archdeacon Brown as coadjutor bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Arkansas ends a bitter church contest. Critics alleged fraud and irregularities, but support from dioceses including Connecticut New York Ohio Texas Pennsylvania and Mississippi helped secure confirmation and celebrate the victory over conspirators.
Washington reports an agreement to permit landing of marines at Manila to safeguard foreign consulates or residents with United States approval. Marines would be withdrawn once danger passes, citing American precedent when ships landed marines at Alexandria, Egypt years ago.
Washington reports at the White House that after the Hawaiian resolution the president will issue a third volunteer call. Troops are to garrison the islands with a fourth call likely. Predictions say about 206000 more soldiers by summer’s end.

Burlington New Jersey June 24 25 000 masons from New Jersey New York Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania attended the dedication of a Masonic home at Taylors Hill. The house and grounds three miles from Burlington serve as a home for indigent widows and orphans of deceased masons. The property was once a summer residence of a wealthy Ohioan.
A Reno dispatch reports several Cripple Creek soldiers en route to San Francisco were left at Wadsworth Nevada after leaving the train to bathe in the river.
In El Paso criticism of M. S. Swain is addressed by C E Jones. He states he declined the captaincy to become first lieutenant, enjoys strong officer support, expects senate confirmation and a late month commissioning, and plans to move from New Orleans drill grounds toward Havana or another foreign port. He notes hopes for retention after the war and potential permanent status as United States volunteers.
A railroad worker links a string of crashes in Santa Fe and other yards to a superstition about three accidents. He recalls Chas. A. Stiner’s fatal incident at the TP yards and a scaffold collapse at the G H shops that injured four, two seriously, while a six year old boy in Santa Fe lost his arms and may die.
