A cable from Manila to the War Department cites a Dagupan river ambush on June 13 of a detachment from the 40th Volunteer Infantry led by Captain Miller. Seven killed, eleven wounded, one missing. reinforcements of fifty routed. overall quiet around cities as American rule settles in, with sporadic clashes in outlying areas.
Five prisoners escaped Coleman's jail by sawing out of a cell. Notables include Noah Wilkerson serving life for murder and Bill Taylor awaiting trial for train robbery and murder. Others named are Clay Mann James Teal John Nelson and Tony Eldredge who aided Wilkerson. A $200 reward was posted for Wilkerson by Runnels County.
In Mayence Germany on June 23 a international celebration honors Johann Gutenberg born 500 years ago. The German inventor of movable type is celebrated for introducing printing with wooden movable types around 1438 and printing the Latin Bible about 1449 to 1450. Gutenberg died in 1468.
Mrs Dewey wife of Admiral Dewey buys 48 Bigfish Island, Chester Basin Nova Scotia for 500 dollars. The island is a third of a mile long and an eighth of a mile wide. She plans a handsome summer residence there.
