The Chamber of Commerce announces a premier mining exhibit described as one of the finest in the West. Industry figures and local leaders praise the showcase as a standout event highlighting mining innovation.
Major S. M. Davis travels to White Oaks to collect minerals for a permanent El Paso chamber exhibit. The chamber certifies his authority, outlines goals to boost regional resources, and invites public support with a $2 joining fee and $12 annual dues. A grand cabinet and electric lighting are planned for an impressive display.
The fund is about complete to erect a monument for Captain Charles V. Gridley, commander of the Olympia in Dewey's Manila fleet. He lies buried in Lakeside cemetery near Erie, Pennsylvania, with his death following the battle by only a few days.
At the Merchants and Butchers association outing in Toledo Arthur Ledyard, a famed balloonist, attempted to steer a balloon after abandoning his parachute. The balloon descended into the lake and he drowned, with his body recovered the next day. a rope around his neck is believed to have caused his death.
Governor Brady of Alaska plans to return in a few days after a May 15 Republican convention declared his continuance in office inimical to Alaska. He blames Congress for slow legislation and says he can explain to his people. Congress focused on Cuba and the Philippines, delaying Alaska matters.
