Van Horn correspondent recounts Mrs White and her daughter’s tale of alleged kidnapping and assault by Mexicans, then reunion with the girl near a mining camp. The case ends with a two day examining trial, releasing all but the Mexican who fled with the girl. Train crews report weeks-long wandering from El Paso toward Van Horn with local aid.
In New York on June 5 Charles F. W. Neely faced arraignment on criminal charges linked to a Cuban postal fraud case. The hearing delayed from prior date due to awaiting Governor Roosevelt’s decision on extradition powers. Lindsay, Neely’s counsel, said he would oppose extradi tion papers Roosevelt signed.
Editor Edward Rosewater of the Omaha Bee faces a contempt charge heard by the Nebraska supreme court. The case concerns four Bee articles allegedly linking Governor Poynter and Judge Holcomb to the pending fire and police commission matter.
Five persons were killed and another unaccounted for after a freight wreck at McGonigle's station in Hamilton Ohio. The crash was blamed on rails spreading on the track. A Pineapple frost is reported to be 53 at Rogers.
Miss Mary Rogers daughter of Standard Oil magnate H P Rogers married William R Coe at her parents home. It is her second marriage after a 1893 elopement with Joseph Cooper Mott and a 1895 divorce. Coe is a widower and member of several clubs.
Decatur Graves killed Saturday by Mexicans on the Rio Grande was buried here yesterday evening. He hailed from San Saba where his parents reside. Mr. Marley plans to form a posse to protect his cattle and move them from the area.
The G. H. furnished an engine three coaches and a baggage car for St. Clement's Episcopal church picnic party. About 180 children and adults rode in the coaches and a large supply of edibles filled the baggage car. The group left at nine o'clock amid cheerful mood.
A clash in which Chinese forces repelled Boxer troops after an attack on a body of troops driving the assailants back into the countryside. The engagement highlights tensions and ongoing skirmishes in the region with no reported higher casualties.
Boxers defeat Chinese troops guarding the Pekin railway at Huang Tsung with heavy losses. A force of 200 Chinese fled, and 160 were killed. Missionaries at Pao Ting Fu remain safe, and precautions are taken for foreigners in Tien Tin amid anticipated Boxer attacks. The General Federation of Women's Clubs begins its fifth biennial convention this morning at the Alhambra theatre in Milwaukee.
Judge Goggin hears several preliminary motions in the case Aguirre versus Lawrence. Yesterday Judge Walthall granted a divorce for Edith Stearnes from John Stearnes on statutory grounds.
Jesus Alarcon, charged with intent to murder, pled guilty to simple assault before Judge Walthall. He was fined and costs. Alarcon previously beat a companion in a saloon.
James Brown Potter was granted an absolute divorce from actress Cora Urquhart Potter in Newport R. I. on June 5. The settlement frees Potter to pursue his own life as a single man.
A large fire last night razed the business block in WaltNey, wiping out five major mercantile firms. Estimated loss stands at $40,000. The report also notes a separate tragedy as a person drowned while fording a river.
F. B. Fitch, a Capitan mines employee and Buffalo native, drowned after attempting to ford the Carrizosa River during a dark stormy night. He and J. Runkle rode from White Oaks to Capitan. Fitch failed to arrive, and both his body and his horse were found downstream. Fitch, 26, was formerly a resident of El Paso. burial arrangements ship his remains to Buffalo by Emerson and Barriea undertakers.

J K Wynn a colored Pullman car porter aged about 36 died suddenly this morning in an omnibus after arriving in El Paso from Kansas City aboard the Santa Fe. Heart disease is listed as the cause. His papers are in Kansas City and Corbin of the Pullman company has wired for information and body disposition. The body rests in the Nagley and Lyons undertaking rooms.
A double header schedule on June 17 will see two excursion trains operated to Tularosa by the Knights of Labor. One train departs El Paso, the other from Capitan and White Oake, with about 150 excursionists expected to travel down to Tularosa and an estimated 800 to ride from El Paso.
