Tippler's tax could aid drunk-driving victims in Olympia
In Olympia committees study bills to curb drunk driving and aid victims. House Bill 870 would tax liquor at four cents per ounce wholesale, routing 30 percent to victims, 50 percent to counties and cities for law enforcement and treatment, 20 percent to state programs. House Bill 289 would stiffen prosecutions, allowing a class C felony for injuries from DUI. MADD and allied groups back the measures, arguing victims receive no current compensation and noting 1981 damages reached about 153 million dollars.
