County says no more big signs for now

South County cities protested a proposal to allow larger billboards in unincorporated areas while existing oversized signs may stay. New Lynnwood Legal Clinic Opens For Low Income

A July 5 launch of a South County clinic at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood offers free legal advice to low income residents. About seventy volunteer lawyers and a dozen paralegals will handle dissolutions family law bankruptcy landlord tenant consumer and social security matters while criminal cases go to the Snohomish County Public Defender.

Beach rangers to host nature walks this summer

Edmonds beach ranger Craig Haley is questioned by 13 year old Chris Edminster from Rainier during a scene at a beach event. Beach rangers will be on hand during low tides this summer to conduct nature walks and educate visitors about marine conservation.

Fire Destroyed Storage Building in Edmonds Area

Fire officials blamed two boys aged 11 and 13 for starting a blaze at a 60 by 20 foot storage barn at 8700 240th St SW. The structure, owned by Carol Asay, was fully engulfed on arrival and the loss, estimated at 18000 dollars, included food, a small tractor, firewood and tools.

Edmonds School Board upholds smoking ban plan

Edmonds officials rejected a policy advisory committee's push to create on campus smoking areas. In a 4 to 1 vote the board kept the non smoking policy, promising tighter enforcement and possible budget shifts for adult supervisors. Other changes include longer suspensions for unexcused absences and clarified athletic suspension rules. Summer events in nearby Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace were announced, including Arts of the Terrace and the Lynn-O-Rama festival with parades and activities.

Jail facility opened in Everett to ease jail overcrowding

Everett county officials opened a new work release facility costing 613000 funded mainly by the state Jail Commission. The center will house inmates on work release, minimum security, and short sentences with dormitories for 22 inmates and two women, aiming for 60 capacity by 2000. ground will break for a new jail in September with bids due August 2 and a two year construction span.
