Tentative Seattle district teachers contract reached after pay, calendar concessions
The Seattle School District and the Education Employees Association reached a tentative agreement addressing work year length, classroom materials funding, and substitute teacher pay. The district agreed to reduce the calendar from 182 to 181 days to stretch funds, boosting teacher pay by about 2.51 dollars per year per day. Substitutes will earn 60 dollars daily under the plan, with broader cost estimates around 75 thousand dollars for supplies across 29 schools. The union sought 65 dollars for substitutes and two mandatory in service days paid at 220 dollars, but the compromise left those items unsettled. The district faces a prior 2.6 million dollar budget shortfall and expects a 1.5 million dollar surplus by year end. The board approved major budgets for operations, capital projects, and debt service and supported the Centennial Center project within the Cultural Arts Stadium plan.
