County Commissioner Frank D Duty Killed By Train

County Commissioner Frank D Duty dies after being struck by an East bound Southern Pacific freight train in downtown Eagle Lake last Friday night at 10 27. He was a popular local figure, veteran of World War I, and former Vick Truck Line proprietor. Funeral services were held at Mall Pine Funeral Home with full military honors at Lakeside Cemetery.

Barnett Seeks Re-Election To Eagle Lake City Council

W A Barnett announces candidacy for re election as alderman on the Eagle Lake City Council. A longtime barber and resident of the Norris building, he was first elected in 1945 to fill an unexpired term, re elected in 1946 without opposition, and is completing his first full term. He urges residents to vote April 6 in the city election.

John C Calhoun Dies In Weimar On Friday Afternoon

Obituary for John C. Calhoun, longtime Oakland and Weimar resident, born May 8, 1870, who died after a long illness on February 19 at his Wenner home. Funeral services were held at 2:50 p.m. from Weimar Funeral Home with Rev. Atkinson officiating. Surviving include wife Bliss Ruth Harris, a son in Houston, three daughters, a sister, and two grandsons. numerous relatives and local mourners attended. The Headlight extends condolences.

Appointment uproar over late Frank Duty succession

About one hundred businesspeople and farmers in Precinct Four protested the hurried appointment of a new County Commissioner to fill the unexpired term of Frank D. Duty after his death in a train accident. They demanded Mrs Duty be consulted, and urged a special election, while G D Redding withdrew from the post. The county judge and attorney tried to calm the crowd, indicating a legal appointment but acknowledging public discontent.

Commissioners Court Purchases County Road Bonds for Cancellation

The Commissioners Court approved purchasing 32 Countywide Road Bonds dated July 5 1947, par value 370,000, to cancel them. The move saves the county over 12,000 in future interest, retiring 42,000 in bonds in 1948 plus 10,000 due January 15 188, totaling 52,000 retired and leaving 748,000 of 800,000.60 bonds outstanding. If redemption continues, the full 800,000 issue may be retired within three years of issuance.

Death of George W Paxton of Sheridan

George W Paxton of Sheridan died Sunday after suffering a heart attack while working on his car. He was formerly a Shell Oil Company gauger and pumpman, born February 20, 1890 in Thoga Louisiana, lived in Sheridan four and a half years, active in Eagle Lake Masonic circles. Funeral services were performed in Mansfield Louisiana with burial in Pelican. Survivors include his wife Mildred two children George Robert and Billy Joe one brother E D Paxton and two sisters Mrs W R Burns and Mrs Ed Lee Twilley.

Darby Announces Candidacy for County Commissioner

W G Darby, longtime Eagle Lake resident and former owner of Darlys Safe, announced Thursday his bid to fill the vacant County Commissioner Precinct No 4 seat. He arrived in Texas in 19S, farmed in Notawa, ran a local restaurant in Eagle Lake, and now seeks the special election following Frans Duty's departure. He urged voters to support him in the election set for Saturday in Precinct No 4, citing his community ties and experience.

Emanuel Roos Seeks Re election as Eagle Lake Mayor

Emanuel Roos announced this week his candidacy for re election as mayor of Eagle Lave. He was elected to finish the term after H W Graves resigned June 1 1947 to join Santa Fe Railway at Bay City. Roos is a long time attorney and Married with a son, running on his city service record.

El Campo Legion Wins Basketball Tournament Over Eagle Lake Independents

The El Campo Legion captured the second annual Eagle Lake Independent basketball event, defeating Eagle Lake Independents in a closely contested tournament. The high school gym hosted multiple evenings of games with players from Weimar, Halle, Ganado, and LaGrange contributing strong performances. Proceeds benefited the Este Lake School band, and referees included Dick Obenhauz and Coach WB Linton Jr. Judge E.P. Abercrombie announced the schedule and results.
