Sailor Billy Stapleton to be buried in Lakeside Cemetery
The body of Win Lee Stapleton, son of Mr and Mrs Ben Stapleton of Eagle Lake, who died in World War II, is expected to arrive for burial in Lakeside Cemetery. Stapleton served in the U S Navy and lost his life near Guadalcanal on October 16 1942. The Cardinal O’Connell transported his body from Guadalcanal to Hawaii for memorial services before final burial. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post here has permission to use its post in his honor as the first Eagle Lake service man to fall in World War II.

Former State Senator Buried In Schulenburg
Former Schulenburg resident Gus Russell, son of Tynae and Rosa Russell, died at his Schulenburg home on February 5, 1948 after a brief illness. He was born November 9 in Schulenburg and educated locally, later at St Laws College San Antonio and A&M College. He married Cora Keasley in 1904 and had four children. He ran the Gus Russell Industries, organized the First National Bank of Schulenburg, and served as city alderman and state senator from 1924 for about nine years. He helped bring the Carnation Company Texas plant to Schulenburg and supported community road and school projects. Survived by wife Cora, son Victor B., daughter Mrs. Frank Merram, sister Mrs. Monnie Garrett, Mrs. Emmie Schwartz, 3 grandchildren, and other relatives. Continued on next page.

John Walker Earns All Tournament Honor in Brenham
Coren Owen Erekson of Brenham led Hagie Lake Eagles as Walker received the all tournament award on Wednesday night in Brenham. Brenham Class A teams defeated the Eagles 43 0 28 and 34 2 as the Eagles started strong but faded with Brenham’s ramp. Earlier Monday Eagle Lake High teams played Sheridan with mixed results the A team winning 33 to 15 and the B team losing 19 to 10. The volleyball girls and basketball boys planned to bus to Brenham for return games with Coach Ereison's squad.

Funeral Rites Held Saturday For J. H. Miles
Funeral services for John Herman Miles were held Saturday at Mill Funeral Home after his death from a stroke. Rev. Bruno and Rev. Brown led the rites with the Baptist choir. burial followed at Lakeside Cemetery. Miles, born January 15, 1888, lived in Eagle Lake area two years, survived by wife Mamie Harvard and children Dee Miles, Ruby Richardson, and Alvin Miles, with numerous relatives and friends attending.
