Suits Filed In County Court To Collect Money

Three suits were filed in county court to recover sums of money. Hollis Massey seeks 37 of a 50 dollar fee claimed due for a suit handled for Ben HL Morrow. Columbus Hospital and Clinic seeks 313 from J F Martin. Columbus State Bank aims to collect 50 from Perry Tesch after a check for that amount drawn on Jacksonville State Bank, Jacksonville, Texas was unpaid. Probate court applications ask for letters of administration for John T Pinchback estate, with heirs contesting. Kenneth Brandon, Ida Selle Brandon granted authority to transfer stocks as administrator. Bond of H B Mayes approved as administrator of the estate of Judge EB Mayes.

Wharton County Fair Dates Set for October 1948

Lanier H. Ferguson of Hungerford announced the Wharton County Fair will run October 2 through 30. Officials considered weather and crop harvest when selecting ship dates for the 1948 event.

Funeral Rites Set For John Herman Miles

John Herman Miles dies Thursday after a Monday attack. Funeral services are Saturday at 2 to 2:30 PM at Mill Funeral Home with Rev. Albert M. Brown officiating. Burial at Lakeskie Cemetery. Miles, born January 15 in Weimar, lived in Weimer then Eagle Lake. Survived by Mamie Halyani Miles, a son Doug Miles, two daughters Mrs. B L Richard and Mrs. Alvin Wiese, six grandchildren, a sister Mrs. A W Linke, two nephews D C Miles and R L Linke, a niece Miss Jean Linke. Parents, infant brother, and another brother Bernard preceded him. He was a farmer and long-time road worker for County Commissioner Frank Duty.

Weishuhn Rites Held For Garwood Resident

Funeral rites were held last Saturday for Edward B. Weishuhn a Garwood area farmer who died at his Garwood home on February 3. Born near Frelsburg on March 25, 1862, he spent 35 years near Garwood. He was buried in Columbus Odd Fellows Cemetery with ministers C Emighols and D Rhea Allison officiating. Survivors include his wife Mary Lyons, one son Herman of Garwood, three daughters and 17 grandchildren.

Roadwork eyed to start May 1 on Matthews Road

District Engineer E. B. Schiller told Eagle Lake visitors in Columbus that plans are being formed for a farm to market road project from Highway 90 A to Wharton County road at Egypt. The work, awaiting Federal approval, is expected to begin around May 1 and bring much needed improvements to the county. A spell of bad weather left roads poor, making the Eagle Lake to Wharton link even more valuable. The Engle Lake High School civics and history classes visited De Predom Trhinon Inet Friday with Superintendent W. C. Reed and others.

Spanish American War Vets To Be Honored Monday

War veterans of the Spanish American War will be honored at a dinner Monday night at the Lions Club Hall. Lee Stapleton of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organized the event and a dinner committee will arrange details. Veterans from 1893 will recount the sinking of the U S battleship Maine in Havana, marking the war’s anniversary.

Rev T W Street to Lead Sunday Presbyterian Services

Rev T W Street of the Presbyterian Seminary at Austin will conduct the worship service at the Presbyterian Church in Hagle Lake at 11 00 o'clock Sunday morning. Negro Man Killed in Elm Grove Shooting Early Saturday

Andy Williams about sixty years old is killed at Elm Grove last Saturday. E. D. Henry, around twenty, is detained in Wharton County charged with the shooting. Local life notes indicate the incident stemmed from prior trouble leading to the fatal shooting.

Mayor Roos Orders City Election To Be Held April 6th

The city of Eagle Lake will hold an election on Tuesday April 6 1948 under an Order and Notice of City Election issued by Mayor Emanuel Roos.
