Big V-J Day Rodeo Promises Local Showdown

Promoters Cipson and Thomas bring their third annual V-J Day rodeo to town on Saturday night at Eade Lake. A wide field of new stock will star, including the famed bull Hitler set to challenge riders. Entry pays out $50 for a rider atop the bull, with $2500 in added prize money for the wild cow milking event and a $500 curing horse contest featuring Boettcher and Border. Local cowboys lead the charge to the arena.

Ladies Return From Ten Day Visit in Southwest Tour

Mrs. E. Beckman and Mrs. Howard Sirahan completed a ten day visit to Santa Fe Romwell and Albuquerque in New Mexico. In Santa Fe they called on Mrs. C. J. Wintermann and Mrs. am Symington who are guests at Bishops Lodge.

Commissioners Court Action In Recent Weeks

The Commissioners Court acted on transfers including 5000 from General Fund to Officers Salary, called an election to consolidate Columbus ISD and Henkhaus Common School District, and set August dates. Sessions included equalization hearings with numerous notices issued. Members discussed purchases, road and bridge warrants, lumber contracts, a hearing for Henry Elsik et al, and budget scheduling with Pickett & Company representatives appearing.

Second Camp Swift Building Ready For County Poor Farm

County Commissioners H A Dromgoole and A J Kainer report second Camp Swift building prepared for removal to the County Poor Farm. The two story 53 room former bachelor officers quarters, bought for 550 after 80 percent war surplus discount, will provide separate housing, a better mess hall and improved health conditions at the poor farm. Also notes visits by Mrs Mary Beckman and relatives.

First Rice of Season Attracts Buyers To City

Rice buyers from 12 mills attended El Campo’s Monday sale as R L Cook Victor Richter and B D Fussell offered lots at the American Rice Growers Association office. Zenith sold for 9.69 and 9.41 at Bay City and Baton Rouge bids topped by 9.66. About 6000 barrels sold. Fussell harvested 150 acres at 23 barrels per acre before drying. American Legion To Install New Officers Tuesday

The W. Cherry-M. Perry Post 108 will install its coming year officers at the regular Legion meeting on Legion Fall Tuesday evening August 17. Newly elected include Commander Fred R. Mexican School Moves to Eagle Lake Campus

A foundation is laid at the Eagle Lake school campus this week and the former Moniail building will be moved to open with the September 9 start. The move follows a court order ending segregation of Mexican students. Mexican Latin American children had attended through fourth grade before joining Eagle Lake. The arrangement creates space for inclusive facilities. Mr and Mrs Marion Carter of LaMarque visited his mother Mrs Chas Carter this week.

Masonic Rites Held For G. W. Keith Tuesday

G W Keith longtime Eagle Lake resident and former city fire chief died at Columbus Hospital of a heart attack. A Masonic service followed by burial at Masonic Cemetery honored his fifty years as Mason with Pallbearers from Eagle Lake Lodge and honorary bearers from the Eagle Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Born 1870 in North Carolina he moved to Eagle Lake fifty one years ago and held posts as County Commissioner City Alderman and fire chief. He married Della Strickland in 1910 and was a Knight Templar Shriner and Mason active in civic life. He survived by a sister and a brother and several nieces and nephews. State and local officials and family attended the funeral with a service in Eagle Lake.

Dr Pepper Plant and Drive In Projects Planned

Dr Pepper Company builds a new Lakeside Drive plant with H J Campbell erecting a Dr Pepper facility near Roland Campbell's home. Nearby B H McElhinney buys Hayes Stephens stake in the former Dr Pepper Bottling building to house a Universal Motor paint and upholstery shop. A drive in is under way by Alfred and Mrs. Marx on Highway 200 near the Southern Pacific tracks and TCM grave pit, while Day and Herbert Marquart have sold a home near Shell Service and plan a site on Highway 90 A west of the city for a future drive in.

Sheridan Hotel Expands Dining With New Community Room

Sheridan Hotel managed by Wi Nielsen has redecorated and opened a large dining area. Guests enjoy home style meals in a spacious room designed to feel like home away from home. District Court Docket Shows Sixty Two Divorce Cases

Clerk Richard C. Schmidt reports the district court docket lists 62 divorce cases awaiting hearings and 25 non jury civil cases. Seven jury cases remain to be heard including Fred Thomas versus Unknown Heirs of Burre Jones and others for damages. The Grand Jury meets on the first Monday in September. criminal cases await indictment.

Eagle Lake schools set to reopen Thursday September 9

Superintendent W C Reed announced Eagle Lake schools will reopen for the 1849 season with classes starting Thursday morning September 9. The high school gains a new coach and principal Arnold Payne and introduces vacational agriculture taught by L J Rosprim.

Colorado County Bond Drive Falls Short Quota

Colorado County failed to meet its bond drive target with total savings bond sales of 118 025 dollars from April 15 to July 1. The county quota was 192 000 dollars, while state totals for all series reached 65 866 000 dollars and patron sales totaled 2 798 183 000 dollars. Miss Sallie F. Boy Scouts of Colorado County Swim Meet at Legion Pool

The Colorado County district in the Sam Houston Area Council hosts its first swim meet at the American Legion Pool in Eagle Lake starting at 7 30 tonight. Scouts from Weimar Columbus Sheridan Hook Island Garwood and other areas participate along with Cub Scouts. Local dignitaries judges timekeepers and announcers will oversee events and winners advance to the District Council meet. Everyone is invited to watch as the community supports the Scouts efforts in swimming and diving activities.

Mrs A E Cearnal Buried Monday At Lakeside

Mrs A E Cearnal died after four years of illness and was buried Monday at Lakeside Cemetery after services at the family home. She was born July 15 1872 in Alleyton Texas and married Arch E Cearnal in 1892. Surviving are two daughters three sons a brother a sister seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Free Swimming For Children Wednesday Schedule

The W. Cherry M. Peery Post 108 American Legion offers free swimming for all White children 18 and under each Wednesday from 1 to 10 pm as part of the child welfare program. Adults pay 24 cents any day, lifeguard Kenneth Davis runs children's instruction mornings for 4 to 6, 6 to 9, and over 10 year groups. The pool closes Thursday for cleaning and will host a swim meet tonight with Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Colorado County in attendance.

Hearing On County Budget Set For Aug 24

The commissioners court in Columbus set August 24 as the annual hearing date for the Ada County budget. The 1947 budget relied on tall valuations totaling 23.71 million dollars.
