Rice Export License Plan Approved for Cuba Trade

The Commerce Department announced a new procedure for issuing rice export licenses to Cuba for the coming year. Exporters may apply for licenses to ship up to 10 percent of their shipments, with validation for 60 days. The Cuban allocation is 2,817,500 bags for July through December, divided into August–October and November–December periods.

Crowds Watch First Eagle Lake Swim Meet At Legion Pool

About 400 spectators attended the first swim meet at Eagle Lake’s new American Legion pool last Friday. Teams from Garwood Rock Island Weimar Columbus and Eagle Lake plus Cub Scouts competed. Winners included Jack Morgan Bobby Hastedt Edward Willrodt Reagan Laughlin Melroy Brant and others with Rotary Club and First Baptist Church members providing refreshments. The event featured multiple strokes and a title race for Cub Scouts.

Large Crowd Attends V J Day Rodeo in Eagle Lake

About two thousand spectators packed the Eagle Lake arena for the third annual V J Day rodeo program presented by Jim Clipson and Rusty Thomas. Traffic along highway 200 was halted as attendees entered. The cutting horse contest featured Alex Border of Hungerford and Clem Boettcher of East Bernard with Boettcher winning five hundred dollars on Hitl er the big Brahma.

New City Business Manager Takes Over Duties Here

E. B. Booth and his wife arrived in Eagle Lake over the weekend and on Monday he assumed duties as City Business Manager with offices in City Hall. The Booths, well known locally, seek a home and storage for furniture as they settle in a furnished apartment. Mrs. Booth, a former Eagle Lake girl, Miss Mildred Bowies, has visited often from Webster Groves Missouri and San Antonio. Contact City Hall to assist with housing.

Death claims aged citizen on Wednesday

Mrs. Mary Konvicka widow of John Konvika died at her daughter’s home at 2 45 a m on Wednesday. Known as Grandma Konvicka she was born in Bohemia in 1863 and came to America at age 12. Funeral was held Thursday morning from Columbus Funeral Home and she was buried beside her son in Columbus City Cemetery. She leaves two daughters three sons 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons Lovie Joe Konvicka Bill Wetz Julius and Jack Cloat and Barry Ledewig. Out of town relatives attended from several nearby towns.

Body Of Rock Island Soldier Returns Home

War Department notified Mr and Mrs John D Henry of Rock Island that their son Private John Paul Henry of the 132nd Infantry has reached the United States and will be buried soon. He was born October 21 1921 in El Campo enlisted September 27 1942 and died in action June 8 1945 in the Cuba Islands area in the Pacific. He is survived by his parents three sisters and six brothers.

Caution-Prowlers On The Loose In Eagle Lake Again

Local residents report multiple burglary attempts and vehicle entries over the weekend in Eagle Lake Coltyville and surrounding areas. A truck owned by Ruddy Randew disappeared from near Royal Cleaners and was recovered later with minimal damage. A windshield breakage and porch screen removal were also reported, with residents urged to secure property and remain vigilant. Sheriff Harvey Lee recovered the Randew truck after it had traveled about 300 miles with keys in the ignition.
