Grand Jury Reports Durham Lock-Up Shocking Condition

The grand jury report presented to the Superior Court last Saturday criticizes the city jail as a disgrace, urging the city government to overhaul conditions to at least match the county jail. Mayor Paul C. Graham responded in court, defending the lock-up and explaining parts of the findings while committee reports note good and bad conditions across offices, jail, and city government.

Fifth Member Died Monday in Person County Typhoid Tragedy

B T Chandler died after five weeks at Watts hospital from typhoid fever spreading through the Chandler family of Person County. In six months five relatives, including the parents, have died. The 64 year old farmer’s death follows a grim sequence starting March 10 with Robert Chandler and includes Bunny, another brother, the mother, and finally the father. Six of nine children remain, three boys and three girls, with three girls still living. The illness struck unusually, with several deaths at the hospital. Funeral services will be held this afternoon from the old home. J H Chandler, a surviving son, traveled to transport the body. C Chandler, a police officer, was a cousin.

Trinity College Opens Term With New Students Arriving

September 4, 1908 report that Trinity College prepares for the September 9 opening. Faculty meeting tomorrow sets year work and committees come together while returning staff and several new students arrive. A bureau of information will assist newcomers. Japan’s Kubota arrives to enroll.

Death of Mrs Minnie Robbins on Peabody Street

Mrs Minnie Robbins died Sunday afternoon at her home after several weeks illness. Paralysis was given as the cause. She was about 70. She leaves a husband and two daughters. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the home with Rev Best officiating, then burial in Maplewood Cemetery. Labor Day was observed in Durham Monday by the post office and banks, with the post office on Sunday hours and banks closed.

Shoulder Broken as Boy Falls From Street Car

Buck Edwards a 17 year old Negro youth fractured his shoulder dislocated the blade after stepping off a street car before it stopped. Dr J M O Kelly treated him but recovery will take time. The accident was due to his own carelessness. no blame on the motorman or conductor.

Death of Two Year Old Child in West Durham

Master Curtis Renn, son of Mrs. Alice Renn, died this morning near the graded school in West Durham. Pneumonia caused the death after several days of illness. The funeral and burial will be held tomorrow at McMannen's chapel, west of West Durham.
