Scholarships Offered by Western North Carolina UDC

The Daughters of the Confederacy Western North Carolina chapter offers two scholarships at State Normal and Industrial College for descendants of Confederate Veterans in counties west of Greensboro. Forty Three Defendants Sentenced During Court Session

The term of court closed with forty three defendants sent to county roads and the work house including three women. Twenty six defendants were discharged by paying fines totaling 375 dollars. Rev C J Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist church, returned from vacation in Virginia.

Court Adjourns After Busy Durham Session

Durham Superior Court wrapped a week of trials with many cases disposed of though the heavy docket caused numerous continuances. Key verdicts included Major Guthrie convicted of murder and sentenced to hang on October 11 and John Thomas sentenced to 15 years in the penitentiary for attempted rape.

Friends of Rev A P Barbee, former pastor of the Christian church here, learn he has accepted the pastorate again. He will begin service in late October or early November after residing recently in Jonesboro.

Contempt Charge Faces Bud Dezern in Court

At the courthouse a capias issued for Bud Dezern cites contempt of court. He allegedly spoke to grand jury member O T Carver about whiskey cases and sought help amid pending prosecutions from West Durham. Dezern denies intent to harm or corrupt the court.

Burglary Bill Presents Death Penalty Risk in Hayti Case

Grand Jury returned a bill for burglary against Miller after a break in at a colored man’s home in Hayti. The case, initially considered as entering with an open door, is now to be tried for his life and will be heard at the December 1 term of court.

Verdict Against Doctor in Nigger Biting Horse Case

The case against Dr. N. P. Boddie was ruled for S. S. Kearney by Justice J. E. Owens. A $15 judgment plus costs was awarded, with plans for possible appeal. The suit claimed the doctor’s horse bit a plug from the head of Kearney’s young son as he walked by.
