Court Disposes Wide Range Of Local Criminal Cases
The Superior court with many defendants paying fines or having costs suspended sent several to the roads for terms. Defendants include Ruffin Tinney for selling whiskey four months, Henry Harris for assault with deadly weapon thirty days, Wes Bates four months, Pearl Smith four months at work house, George Leach sixty days, and Bud Mitchell various outcomes. The grand jury returned not true bills on three whiskey charges. A railroad men case involving Layton, Davis, and Thomas resulted in fines and costs, while Irvin A. Smith received four months on the roads. Other verdicts include Charles Moore guilty of house breaking and larceny, Will Payne multiple six-month sentences, Vaugh four months and two months, Arch Hammett and Charles Pearce two months each, and Dave Glover Mamie Rowland fortification and adultery with fines and jail terms.

Trial of Major Guthrie for Wife Murder Begins
The trial began with jury selection and morning testimony in the murder of Lizzie Guthrie. Witnesses described threats by Guthrie, conversations about the wife, and a scuffle at her home. The jury found Guthrie guilty of first degree murder. sentencing not yet decided.
Child Killed In Morning Roxboro Street Accident
About 9 am on Roxboro street a car driven by Mr and Mrs T E Cheek struck four year old Ethel Horner, daughter of Mr and Mrs R D Horner, killing her within twenty five minutes. The father Horner was on the Guthrie jury. Judge Council adjourned the court one hour so he could go home. Mr Cheek surrendered to Sheriff John F Harvard and was released on his own recognizance. Both Cheek and his wife remain in bed with nervous prostration.
