Engineer Holden Cleared In Larceny Case At Justice Court
J L Holden an engineer on the Southern road and Brotherhood member faced a larceny charge before Justice E Owens. He claimed he gathered scraps to relight a fire and offered to pay or bill the company. The watchman testified and both sides argued. Holden was discharged and the costs taxed to the witness. The trial drew notable attention but concluded in his favor.

Funeral of E W Hayes at East Durham burial ground
The remains of E W Hayes who died at his East Durham home were interred at Markham burying ground Wednesday afternoon. The East Durham Baptist Church service was led by Rev W F Fry of Goldsboro and Rev J W Downey, the current pastor. A large crowd attended the funeral and followed the casket to its resting place. Hayes was 68 and had been in declining health for months leaving three sons and one daughter with many relatives in the area.

The case of Horner versus Cheek over the killing of Horner’s child last August was settled this week. The damages amount was not disclosed, ending a matter of.durham interest without a court trial.
