Pickpocket Activity at Union Station Tied to State Fair Rush

Pickpockets operated at the city’s union station on Thursday morning amid State Fair crowds. James T. Cates, a noted Person County hunter, lost $35 to $40 and papers after a purse theft, forcing him to borrow funds to continue. Jack Barbee of Patterson Township had $21.50 stolen including a gold piece and a check. a woman also lost her gold watch in the scramble for the first state train.

The 1908 county tax books are completed with total property valuation at 21 899 382 dollars. Estimated total collections near 200 000 dollars, with general taxes set at 182 782.15. Resolutions honor Redmountain pastor Bowen as he resigns

The Redmountain Baptist church praises Rev. J. D. Bowen for two years of devout service and prays for guidance in his new pastorate. A copy of the resolution is sent to the Durham Recorder and the Biblical Recorder. Also reported is the death of Mr. W. D. Peed at about 41, leaving a wife and two daughters. Funeral services will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge with burial in the family cemetery.

Iron Works Sold Yesterday in Receivership Case

The Durham iron works were sold yesterday in a receivership matter, with W. R. Kuker of Florence South Carolina reclaiming ownership. Kuker’s brother J T Kuker posted 6050 to take the stock, the sale likely to be confirmed, liabilities under 9000, price viewed as fair.

Death of Mrs Mims at Angier Avenue Home

Mrs. Mims aged 62 died Tuesday evening at her Angier avenue home after illness. The body was sent Wednesday afternoon to her old home in Chatham county. She leaves a husband and one daughter. The funeral party included many friends and relatives.

Death of long term county home inmate reported

Mrs. Cornelia Evans an inmate at the county home was found dead in her bed last Tuesday morning. She had been at the home about 14 years and while partly demented she never caused trouble, and there were no prior health indications.

A drunken Negro man at Winston Salem suffered a miraculous escape after tripping and falling on the rails as a switch engine bore down. The cross beam struck him and slid him off the track. he was only shaken and uninjured beyond a momentary peril.
