The Sandy Level revival draw gathered attendees and closed with baptisms on Saturday. The column lists visits, births, illnesses, school and church events, family news, tobacco and crop notes, and local travel among residents including Markham, Hall, Rigsbee, and O Neals, with Governor Glenn slated for Green Level in October.
The Rose of Shearon revival ends after a week with two baptisms on Sunday morning. Rev W E Dunnegan from West Durham aided Rev J F Crisp in preaching. Marion Garrard improves from typhoid. Joseph Tilley, long ill, died last Saturday and was buried at Pleasant Green church. Mrs Sam Garrard visits from near Dukes Chappel as Miss Pearl Copley visits the Dunnegans. Weather favors crops with low illness. Rev J S Thompson held meetings at Union’s Grove with success. Rev C C King of Durham leads another series.
Dr S E Thompson a dentist attempted to take his own life last Thursday evening by drinking much of an ounce bottle of laudanum. A physician summoned quickly controlled the poison and Thompson, said to be in financial trouble, was taken home after treatment and is expected to recover.
Robert Holloway aged 79 died at his Cleveland street home after a illness. He was a First Baptist member and longtime Durham resident, twice married to Miss Bumpass of Person county and Mrs. Reid of Virginia, leaving children John R. Holloway, Maggie Holloway, and W. J. Holloway. Funeral was held at Maplewood Cemetery after visiting hours. Durham Buggy Company buys former fertilizer factory near Edgemont to build a plant, boosting capacity to meet orders.
