Republican Delegates Convene at Court for County Meeting
The county Republican convention met in the courthouse last Saturday with about a hundred delegates. J. W. Rigsbee opened the session and J. V. Rigsbee declined the chair, B. A. Peel was elected permanent chairman, and D. Cole secretary. A credentials committee reported and delegates were elected to Judicial, Congressional, Senatorial, and State conventions. Notable speakers urged Republican unity and victory as delegates were announced for multiple races and districts.

Incendiary Fire Attempts House on Proctor and South Streets
An unknown offender tried to burn a house on Proctor and South Streets early Monday. Fire was set near the floor beneath the house using kerosene, but was discovered in time to prevent damage. Inmates Mrs. Mahala Harris and Miss Rosa Weatherspoon slept through the incident. Police pursue clues as similar fires have appeared recently.

Four county roads candidates held for superior court
Mayor Graham sent four candidates for county roads to the superior court. Monday actions included Will Smith bound over for knife attack with a $50 bond, Gus Austin for whiskey sale with $100 bond, John Williams for concealed weapon with $25 bond, Will Manigo for same offense, and Al Crawford for carrying and using a gun with fixed bond. Affray and drunk cases added fines and costs.

Miss Annie Andrews Injured by Passing Buggy
Sunday afternoon Miss Annie Andrews daughter of Mrs Shelley Andrews was hurt when a buggy struck her as she walked near Lakewood park. It is unclear who was driving but three young ladies were in the buggy and the accident occurred while they were trying to pass. The injuries are painful but not serious and she hopes to be out in a few days.

Sears Sues Traction Company Over Injuries
J M Sears, struck by a trolley pole on a street car weeks ago, has filed suit for damages and is represented by Winston Bryant. The case will be docketed at the next term. damages sought are estimated by some at 10000 dollars. Sears has not recovered enough to leave his room.

Death of Dr J A Smith Ends Durham Physician’s Era
Durham mourns oldest resident physician Dr Julien A Smith who died Friday at one o'clock after an operation at Watts hospital. He was 54, survived by wife Miss Mary Simms and two children Mary Loomis Smith and Frank Alexander Smith. A native of Sampson county he practiced in Durham for 23 years and was active in Knights of Pythias. Funeral at 4 PM Saturday from his home with ministers G T Adams and S S Best officiating. pallbearers were fellow physicians and civic leaders.

Afflicted Chandler Family in Person County Stricken by Typhoid
Rufus Chandler of Person County died at Watts Hospital from typhoid fever as part of a grim sequence of four deaths in the Chandler family this year. The mother and three sons had died earlier, with two more seriously ill and two convalescent, all connected to the same home area near Roxboro.

Death of Mrs Byrd at Elizabet h Street Home
Mrs J J Byrd died last Friday night at her son W H Byrd's home on Elizabeth street after a period of feeble health. She was 63 and leaves husband three sons W H C L and CD Byrd and daughter Miss H C Byrd. Remains were taken to Morrisville for interment on Saturday afternoon.

The fifth congressional district Democratic executive committee met in Greensboro Friday electing C. C. Hoyle Brooks’s campaign manager as chairman after J. N. Wilson’s resignation. R. H. Sykes stood in for S. Brawley, praising the gathering. Congress man Ollie James of Kentucky is expected to visit Durham during the campaign, boosting interest.
