Dezern case ties five counts to West Durham whiskey sales
Bud Dezern faced Justice Owens on five whiskey selling charges with bond set at $100 per case. The trials follow police actions targeting West Durham bootlegging, with his father and two brothers already in court on similar bonds. Dezern fled then was captured from Greensboro for trial at the Durham term, part of about 19 family cases scheduled, including relatives Salisbury. July 31, Charles W. Henry, of Washington DC, was taken off a train at Asheville after acting as a mental observer, claiming he was pursued by a haunting presence and requiring police escort back to Washington.

Death of John W. Gattis Noted in Durham
News arrives from Durham of the death of John W. Gattis. He once left Durham for Texas where he settled, later returning to marry Miss Couch of Durham. The couple had four children and his remains were laid to rest in Dallas, Texas. He was son of the late John Wesley Gattis and brother of R. L. Gattis of Durham and Charlie Gattis of Richmond, Virginia.

In Wilmington a grocery store fire led to the arrest of grocer G M Murrell for alleged arson. Deputy W A Scott led the investigation. Murrell reportedly had limited stock but substantial insurance. investigators noted suspicious fire patterns and the upstairs family residence above the store.
