Hesperian torpedo attack near Ireland saves all aboard

The Allin Line steamer Hesperian carrying 30 passengers and 60 crew from Liverpool to Montreal was struck by a German submarine off the Irish coast near Queenstown as darkness fell on a Saturday. The ship remained afloat and, according to the company, every soul aboard was saved though about 20 were injured. Passengers and crew reported the blast and water surge, with two American crewmen among the survivors. Local townspeople and officials noted the eerie eerie calm after the event, while rescue steamers delivered the wounded.
