Scottsboro figure flogged at Kilby Prison in Alabama

Heywood Patterson, linked to the Scottsboro case, received 10 lashes at Kilby Prison for knifing a fellow convict. Warden Tennyson Dennis confirmed Patterson and Wille Bruce were whipped with a doctor present and both fully clothed. State Prison Director Frank Boswell approved the punishment. Patterson had a long record and had been flogged before. Bruce, committed for grand larceny, had no prior infractions noted.

Treasury Seeks Liquidation Surplus From Farm Mortgage Fund

The Federal Farm Mortgage Corporation, now in liquidation, has a surplus of 3.1059 billion dollars that the Treasury wants back for the general fund. Directors have not acted on disposition of the money despite two deaths since the authority expired. Acting Secretary A Lee Wiggins told the Senate Agriculture Committee that Congress adjourned before acting on using 83 million of the funds as a reserve for expanded lending by the Federal Land Banks. FCA officials two of three Farm Mortgage directors favor the measure. the third is a Treasury representative, Edward F. Bartel.

A L Stephens 47 Dies At Hartford

A L Stephens forty seven died at his home in Murtford early Sunday after a long illness. Funeral services were held Monday at Pondtown Church with Rev John Jeffers and Rev ide Judat of Clark officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Stephens was a World War II veteran and a member of Post 82 American Legion. Williams Dies at Newton Home at 64

Funeral services for Stephen W. Williams, 64, held today at Newton Methodist Church with Rev. A B Tanton officiating. Interment in Newton Cemetery. Mrs J E Melton died at her Birmingham home at 10 am today. Friends in Dothan were notified. Funeral set for tomorrow but arrangements incomplete at noon. Survived by her husband and several sons and daughters.

Trial opens in mare killing case against Mrs. Anderson

In Linden Alabama the trial of 30 year old Mrs. Gilbert Anderson for poisoning her first husband Lowery W. Digman 45 opened in a crowded sweltering courtroom. Digman died days before she wed Anderson and her new husband faces first degree murder charges in Digman’s death though not on trial with her. Authorities arrested the Andersons in Birmingham May 23 after toxicology found arsenic in Digman’s body. Digman died at relatives home after treatment in a Selma hospital. Jury selection dominated the morning. Prosecutor is Som Boggs. Defense lawyers are James Gibson John Drinkard and E D Guffie.

Explosion on Vagabond Kills Boy Leaves Father Burned

A cabin cruiser Vagabond exploded three miles off Biscayne Bay killing five year old Richard Waldron and burning his father Alfred Waldron and brother Alfred Waldron Jr. The elder Waldron, a veteran news reel photographer, was thrown 30 feet overboard and later rescued with his son and another crew member.
