James S. McKnight Dies Near Arion at 72

Birmingham Collects 22 Barrels of Tokens

In Birmingham 22 barrels of sales tax tokens were turned in for redemption for the crippled children fund. L. M. Rotharmel of the tobacco tax division estimated the value at about 200 dollars a barrel. These tokens, first redeemed since a state act ended their use, support the Birmingham crippled children clinic through an American Legion drive aided by downtown contributions and newspaper route boys.

William J. Barnes Dies At Montgomery

William J. Barnes, 58, assistant state treasurer, died in Montgomery after a cerebral hemorrhage. A native of Butler, Alabama, he served as chief accountant in the State Auditor's office for eight years and was an assistant to Treasurer John Brandon since January. He joined state service in 1935 as a liquidation agent in the banking department after leaving his position as cashier of the First National Bank of Futan. In 1939 he moved to the auditor's office.
