Mines Reopen in Alabama With Many Idle Yet
Seventeen of Alabama's 81 union mines reopened today while surveys show most of the 22,000 idle miners have not heeded John L. Lewis's return-to-work plea. Operators report some mines, including Dolomite shaft and Bradford slope, back to operation though many mines remain idle. In Indiana, miners resume at two closed shafts but statewide they show slow compliance with the production appeal as 17 shafts were to reopen by tomorrow.
