Ashford in Houston County became the first Alabama community to oversubscribe its quota in the Alabama War Chest Drive. The Lions Club led a mass meeting to rally pledges, with $1,042.20 raised of a $1,000 target as volunteers canvass surrounding areas. Lawrence Oakley chaired the breakfast event and J. Frank Rush, a war veteran, urged contributions to aid camp and overseas troops.

Washington Senate action by voice vote approves a bill to raise cash pay for dependents of service members. The measure, set at six dollars monthly for a wife and each child and four dollars for additional children, goes to the White House after House passage. New York reports a German DNB agency note that Paris morality press announced Remala's death.
Allied forces push across the Volturno as American and British troops seize five villages along the eastern Fifth Army front. Montgomery’s Eighth Army advances to Santo Stefano and Montecalvo, while air power pounds German positions and a rail yard at Skoplje. Eisenhower praises infantry footsoldiers amid tough mountain fighting and gains toward high ground on the Volturno watershed.
About 1 500 Americans and other Westerners left Japanese hands on the Tela Mera and boarded the exchange liner Gripsholm to return home after 21 months of internment. A line of somber Japanese guards contrasted with cheerful exiles as they moved along the gangplank.
