FDR Believes Farm Prices Still Too Low

President Roosevelt says farm prices have risen 32 percent since the March year average but are not high enough. An executive council economist notes September farm product prices up 32 percent while the cost of goods bought by farmers rose 11 percent, underscoring the administration view of still too-low prices.

Washington Oct. 17 AP Approvals of home loans in Alabama for the week ending Oct. 6 totaled 157, representing 276199. The Home Owners' Loan Corporation announced 42 loans with reductions totaling 107374 and 115 without reductions totaling 167825. Fifty six applications amounting to 114058 were rejected after appraisal, two were withdrawn, and one loan of 3961 was closed via bond exchange. The corporation also noted 2450 impending foreclosures on urban homes nationwide prevented, valued at 6991006, due to its actions during the week.

Children of War Dead Exempt From Tuition at State Schools

Montgomery Oct 18 The attorney general ruled that children of soldiers sailors and marines killed in World War I should be admitted to state institutions free of tuition. He said the 1931 act provides the benefit and that the state’s inability to fund more aid does not forfeit their right to free tuition at the schools.

Cottonseed crush rising in Alabama mills this period

Alabama mills received 71,387 tons of cottonseed and crushed 49,482 tons from August 1 to September 30, per a commerce department study. Figures show gains over last year and detail crude oil, cake and hulls produced, with national totals for the same two months.

Memphis Man Is Killed by Wife in Woodstock Suburb

In Memphis Oct 18 AP Robert Storie 44 unemployed railroad man was hacked to death by his wife at their Woodstock home. She told officers he had beaten her. After the slaying she woke daughters Manella 19 and Clara 13 for a death bed family prayer before calling a neighbor physician who pronounced him dead. Mrs Storie was taken to the county jail for questioning.

Prizes Set For NRA Parade Floats

The NRA parade committee announced prizes for floats entered in the October parade. First prize 50 dollars, second 25, third 10, with special prizes to be awarded for agricultural floats. New floats include Pilots Club and American Legion. Harry Hall leads float entries. at least three out of town floats promised.

Negroes Held on Robbery Charge in Houston County

Three African American men, K. C. Stanford, Alex Miller, and James Roberts, are jailed on robbery charges after allegedly stopping a white man near the A. C. L. conl csate on Montgomery highway. The victim, L. H. Hughes, says $41.60 in cash and a half pound of cheese were taken. bond not set.

Black market worker wounded. man stabbed at city market

Woodrow Sutton, a Black City Market employee, was stabbed in the chest as he left the store around 6:30 am. The attacker fled. Sutton was hospitalized in non serious condition. Police said the assailant was angered after a reported romantic encounter the night before.

Taxes Must Be Paid In Advance For Property Redemption

Houston county property owners with lands sold for unpaid taxes face a new law requiring 1934 levies to be paid in advance along with outstanding taxes. Tax officials cite a letter from the state tax commission explaining the change, which shortens redemption eligibility and extends the ownership period to three years.

National Solons Secured For NRA Celebration In Dothan

Two national figures will speak in Dothan on October 26 for the NRA loyalty demonstration. U S Senator John H Bankhead and Congressman Henry B Steagall will discuss Cotton Reduction Plan and Banking Guarantee Deposit Law respectively with talks at the county courthouse. If Florida Congressman Caldwell accepts he will speak on The Future of the Wiregrass. Amplifiers will handle a large crowd beginning at 1 pm. Fontanna to Get Trial Tomorrow

Fontanna, jailed in Jacksonville, Florida, for a Florida fugitive arrest, faces a habeas corpus hearing tomorrow before Judge H. A. Pearce. Delays moved the date from Friday to Monday, then again postponed. Fontanna, held on a fugitive warrant, has had his transfer from city to county jail and Gov. Shultz has sent requisition papers to Alabama’s governor, though return awaits the hearing. He is accused of slugging a truck driver and taking about 76 dollars.

Dothan to Represent City in NRA Parade at Montgomery

More than 50 Dothan residents including city officials will attend the NRA parade in Montgomery tomorrow. A 7 am bus will depart City Hall for the capital with a private automobile bearing Dothan’s name in the march. Mayor Ske Frell, V. C. Lokey and Van Ritch will join the car contingent.

Husband Gets 21 Years For Burning Family

Floyd Johnson, 27, was convicted in Jacksboro Tennessee on charges of burning his wife and three children to death the night of August 36. Jurors recommended a 21 year sentence. He said he escaped through a window after an explosion. State witness Eulas Anderson testified Johnson sought help to burn the house claiming he needed money to pay for an automobile and life insurance on the children had been taken.

Accidents Claim Three in State

Three people died in Alabama accidents. A three year old child Frank Morrison burned to death in a barn near the parents home at New Merkle yesterday. W R Martin of Birmingham died in hospital today after injuries from a truck collision with a streetcar. Moses A Gann was killed yesterday near Lincoln when run over by a train.

Preferable To Measure Snake By Auto Bumper

The Sagle news staff weighed a rattlesnake killed on the highway between Abbeville and Columbia. Fred Thames, a local traveling man, drove in with the snake stretched from his car bumper. It was measured at five feet seven inches after debate over bumper versus tape. The reptile carried 11 rattles and a button and weighed 30 pounds.
