Newville Sailor Recalls Bold Pacific Air Battle
Harold J Roberson, aviator’s mate second class from Newville Alabama, describes a dramatic June skirmish off Honshu where two large Navy patrol bombers fended off Japanese fighters. Roberson and crew claimed three Japanese aircraft shot down at extreme range, with no American losses, earning further DFCs as he logged 25 missions along the Pacific coast from Tinian to Iwo Jima. His siblings and parents, Mr and Mrs J T Roberson of route 2 Newville, await further honors as he ends his service with multiple decorations. Corporal Curtis C Hardy of Headland and others discharge details follow with service and unit badges.
