Linden Couple Held In Death Of Woman's First Husband
A Linden Alabama woman and her husband of four days after her first husband’s death are jailed on murder charges. A toxicologist linked the death to arsenic taken over months. The couple married March 26 after the March 22 death of Lowery Digman. Authorities exhumed Digman’s body. the couple previously lived in Linden and Birmingham. Soldier Flees Jail While Awaiting Trial On Robbery Charge
Shelby County Sheriff L. T. Boreman said a search continued for Claude A. Carter of Indianapolis a 20 year old soldier who escaped Friday while awaiting trial on a robbery charge. The FBI said Carter was one of four prisoners who fled Ft McClellan stockade December 1 after overpowering a guard. Carter and two companions Marion E. Jones and John A. Mirra were indicted for robbery of Clyde Burkhalter a Sylacauga motorist on the same day they escaped. The car was found in Louisiana December 2. Jones was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in February. Mirra remains jailed and Carter is to stand trial in July. Carter had been recaptured December 16. The fourth man John Griffin is listed as 25 a Negro from Dallas. Carter escaped Friday by knocking down part of a brick wall in a temporary cell during cleaning.
