TVA Fight Splits House Over TVA Expansion Hearing
Washington May 20 AP torn apart internally on the Ten- Messen Valley Authority issue the house military committee plunged today into hearings on legislation to enlarge TVA s operations. A powerful element fighting to kill the bill aimed to ask TVA directors why their agency should buy cows why it needs airplanes to transport employes and about its expenditures and purchases in general. McSwain sees close vote though these committee members were confident they could kin the measure which already has passed the senate by a three to one majority chairman McSwain D South Carolina has said he thought the committee would approve it by a close vote. It would give the authority specific permission to sell electricity which an adverse court ruling said was lacking under the existing act. It would permit TVA to regulate resale rates and to buy up private power facilities for the distribution of its power. In addition it would set the authority issue up to 100000000 in bonds. The present limit is 50000000 Representative May D Kentucky one of the leaders in the anti TVA forces said today he thought the hearings would require about two weeks. When we get the investigation completed he said I don t think there will be any question of the committee s action. There are a bunch of dreamers and visionaries in charge of TVA social uplifters who think the government ought to do everything from peddling peanuts to selling thrashing machines. TVA is recklessly extravagant and engaged in more activities that are unauthorized by legislation than those that are.
