Dr Hymen Mayerson of Tulane University told the New Orleans Academy of Science that humans began standing 25 million years ago yet cannot stand upright quietly for more than 10 minutes. A nonfainter or fainting tendency may occur as gravity draws blood from the heart, making sustained upright stance difficult.
