Portents Hint for Agreement on Tax Scheme
Washington May 13 signs of a compromise on the tax program appeared as administration leaders pressed to defeat the Frasier Lemka plan for refinancing farm mortgages with 3 billion in new currency. Morgenthau testified 283 of 600 corporations earning over a million in 1634 would pay higher taxes under a plan basing levies on undisclosed profits while others predicted equal numbers would incur higher taxes under a different corporate tax approach. A shift toward a single levy on corporate income and undistributed profits gained favor, while House debate on the Frasier Lemka financing continued amid AFL opposition and inflation fears. The House leadership moved to push a 19 million aid for farm lands and inflationary charges were hotly contested as Byrnes urged the plan’s defeat.
