South industrial expansion gains pace in postwar era
A Senate committee report notes Southern states attract investment by abundant materials and labor, lower costs, and improving transport. It finds 87 percent income growth 1940 to 1947, with 25 percent attracted by labor surplus and productivity matching the North. Firms seek cost stability, not just cheap labor, and selective plant moves reflect unions and tax incentives, water transport, climate, and local capital support. The South, though still agriculturally dependent, shows real progress with chemical, farm equipment, tire, automobile, electrical, aluminum, shoe, and dairy industries broadening its base.
