Hospital Vote Planned as County Considers Tax Election
Groundwork for a special county hospital tax election was laid today after word of possible aid funds. Commissioner W Perry Calhoun disclosed developments but would not name the donor of a proposed building lot, calling it in a desirable location. He said funds would be placed in a special account for the hospital until state and federal aid arrive. He noted a strong chance the Legislature could appropriate a State Aid to Counties hospital fund to help the project. A fund exists but has been depleted. Hill Burton federal aid requires two thirds of necessary funds first. Probate Judge J Moert Logue expects the Board of Revenue to set an election soon after petitioner list is checked for qualified voters. A F E Johnston said five percent of registered voters are represented, though exact numbers await verification. Wilton Sturges Sr unofficially chairs petitioners. Calvin drew up the request.
