The Alabama Knights of Columbus opened their annual convention in Montgomery with a Mass at St. Peter's Church celebrated by Bishop Thomas J. Toles of Mobile. Local official Col. W. P. Screna welcomed Montgomery and Dr. A. L. Stabler of Birmingham presided at the opening business session. Grand Knight Harold McGlynn led the rituals as membership reportedly rose.
Montgomery May 11 AP A regional high school music festival gathers over 20 schools from across Alabama for the fifth annual event. A massed concert at 4 p m features the outstanding Mian Georgia Wagner president. Attendance is estimated at 400 to 500 with out of town students housed at Huntingdon College. Senior contests offer no prize.
Italy asserts sole sovereignty in Ethiopia as Baron Aloisi refuses to discus the Ethiopian conquest at the League of Nations. Despite hints Italy might quit the league sanctions appear to stay, while Geneva debates the Ethiopia issue amid a delicate international stance.
A 22 year old Raymond Farr of Memphis Tennessee was detained for questioning after the brutal killing of Lilian Guild in a mysterious assault near the M C A Hotel. Police report Farr claimed a scraped hand from a fall explained his injuries.
The Associated Press reports on May 21 a heated fight over the Frazier Lemke bill to add 3 billion dollars for farmer refinancing. Democratic leaders push to defeat the measure as House votes loom on discharging the rule and a six hour debate. Key figures include Rep Lemke North Dakota Rep Boland Pennsylvania and other party leaders.
Seniors at Dothan High prepare for an annual chess night with an elaborate program. The event opens with a gong, includes a Bennett address, a club history, a closing song, a senior poem, a will reading, piano solos, a class prophecy, giftatory, and Alma Mater. The program starts at 8 o clock.

At a medical exhibit in Manasas City, Dr Earl C Padgett demonstrated a plastic ear built from rib cartilage. A shell shaped framework from the rib forms the core, skin from the neck covers it, and thigh skin provides a scarless finish. The neck skin is moved to the temple via a pedic flap for a natural look.
A Mississippi State College student was wounded Saturday afternoon at the baseball diamond. Two winged suspects, Claude Michenos and an accomplice, were jailed in Lowndes and Starkville for assault with a crutch on the injured student, Rackley, after he protested a dangerous act. Summerlin, the crippled victim, was arrested briefly, then released for questioning.
