City Utility Bills Pass in Senate in Alabama

Montgomery March 31 AP The Alabama Senate approved several utility bills by narrow margins aimed at enabling cheaper power from Roosevelt era programs. Bill No 231 would allow counties and cities to borrow from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to buy light and water plants without counting the loan against local debt. First bills to lay feeder lines to Muscle Shoals and to allow interjurisdictional service passed 23 to 8 and 25 to 7. Senator Mullins led the drive on the third bill with an amendment requiring condemnation of existing plants before entering the utility field.

Rats Trapped and Fleas Bottled in Fever Study

Rats are trapped on the third floor of City Hall in a U S Public Health Service study of Frili's fever. Dr J B Ryan directs the work capturing about 20 rats daily, counting fleas and parasites, and storing specimens in alcohol while plans for guinea pig tests are prepared for early summer pending more cases.

No Reprieve Yet as Crawford Heads to Penitentiary

J. L. Crawford former president of the Dothan National Bank, convicted on two seed loan charges in U S court last February and sentenced to 13 months, was to be moved to the federal penitentiary in Atlanta Saturday unless a last minute reprieve is granted by Judge C B Kennamer. U S officials said no postponement notice had been received and Crawford would report to the federal building at 9 a m. He would then be driven to the penitentiary with Deputy Marshal J W Daughtry.

President Signs Forest Measure to Put Men to Work

The President signed a forest conservation employment bid directing the Labor Department to enroll idle men from cities into civilian conservation corps. Rockford Alabama March 31 members of the Rockford Home Demonstration club completed a two story hogse built entirely by 28 members. The native stone building features two auditorium rooms and will host meetings demonstrations and community events. Planning began nearly two years ago and funding came from donations suppers and pageantry.

Tri motor plane crash near Neodesha injures ten dead four

A tri motor airplane carrying Canada’s championship basketball team crashed near Neodesha Kansas killing four and injuring ten. Six Hurt in Malvern Auto and buggy crash

Five men were hospitalized and a sixth treated at home after a collision near Malvern last night. Victims include Sam Powers, BE T. Cain, Lester Bruner, Clyde Deal, and Alva Lewis with Ivey Lewis not seriously hurt. Alva Lewis suffered chest and back injuries. Powers and Bruner had leg injuries. Mayor Cermak died from colitis not the gunshot

Chicago March 31 AP Anton J. Cermak mayor of Chicago died from ulcerative colitis and the gunshot wound was only a contributory factor according to his physician Dr Kal Meyer. He said the bullet wound had healed but the mayor’s general decline and mental distress from the illness led to his death.

Two County Bridges Blocked for Repairs

Houston county road crews closed two bridges on the Kinsey and Cowarts road and the Webb and Dothan road for repairs. Road Superintendent C. G C. McEachin said the Dawsey bridge would reopen by next Friday and the Golf Creek bridge within two weeks.

Relative of Rockefeller Dies in Russell Kansas

Frank Rockefeller, 79, cousin of John D. Rockefeller Sr., prominent Russell resident, died today in an Ellsworth hospital. The body will be moved to Los Angeles for burial beside his wife, who died there years ago.
