Two former German refugees now in the American Army, Captain W G Plaut and Chaplain Joe Flamm, retraced rooms in a Cologne mansion used by the Nazi regime. They recalled the exile and wealth built by Nazi profiteers, yet offered no glee at the oppressors’ downfall.
A Negro was arrested for firing at a jail and charged with assault and property damage. Deputy J. T Casey and investigators Clayton Adams and Helms reported the incident occurred yesterday near Cabh Peelon. The suspect faced charges and was released on bond of 6900.
Battle update from the island front shows the Pith Division advancing 500 yards on the Jet flank and the Turd Davison gaining ground center while the Third Division dominates northeastern heights. The dedication of the new gymnasium and auditorium at Enterprise Academy will honor the late William Donald, a Negro educator. The ceremony Friday at 1 PM includes Enterprise School Board and city officials, a 3 piece choir, Jane Donald leading the chorus, an address by Dr. J. F. Drake of the A and M Institute for Negroes, and a luncheon prior to the program.
Four tuberculosis cases were reported in Houston County among 189 statewide in January. The State Department of Health announced through the county Health department. January total topped December by three but was over 100 below January last year. Only four of 67 counties had ten or more. Jefferson led with 47, Mobile 36, Calhoun 10, Montgomery 10. Private Roy Clower of Dothan a ground crew member at Avon Park Army Air Field, part of a record engine-change crew, announced today. The crew of four mechanics and two propeller specialists changed a Flying Fortress engine in one hour 28 minutes. Clower, a Houston County High School alumnus, enlisted June 194? and trained at Columbiet. Renee Adams of Cattonwood High School will represent Houston County in the district finals of the oratorical contest April 4 at Tray State Teachers College. The subject is Planning for the Postwar World.
Cambridge and the girl were convicted in an internationally publicized trial at Old Bailey on charges related to the killing of taxi driver George Edward Heath, known as the man with the cleft chin, last Oct 6. Huston, sentenced to death, was the first American soldier to receive such a sentence by British authorities in wartime and was executed at 9:10 am in the presence of a small group of British prison officials and two American officers.
Tank Reeves leaves for Kilby Prison to serve a year sentence following burglary accusations involving Millard Gulet in West Powell. He was arrested in September 1967, bonded, then affirmed by Abe Wencourt. Reeves is now in the pen as of August.
