Cent county campaign to fund Red Cross relief moves ahead with canvassing in rural and suburban areas. Weather slowed the start but rising temperatures were expected to energize efforts as volunteers call residents and engage stores and households in support.
An AP report from Berlin and Tokyo says Swiss authorities will probe a shooting at a war camp in New Zealand with 4% Japanese deaths and 3 wounded. Japan declares reprisals unlikely. Swiss intervention reportedly occurred after inmates refused camp rules and attacked guards with stones and improvised weapons.
Allied forces press German positions on multiple fronts as heavy shipping losses mount. Soviet and Allied action push into contested territory near Moscow Velikie and in North Africa. RAF strikes disrupt western German lines while German countermeasures threaten supply routes.
Charles M Cooper director of the Dothan Ozark Defense Rental program said a house to house check will be conducted soon in the Wiregrass area to gauge compliance with OPA rent regulations Investigators from the OPA rent control branch will detail the probe and enforcement against willful violators who fail to register rental property Registers show less than half of rents in the Dothan Ozark area are registered About 8000 of 12 10 or more accommodations are registered Landlords have had ample time to register but many have not Cooper warned registrations began Oct 1 and concluded late November with continued acceptance of late applications but a large share remain unregistered No definite date for the investigation was set but it will occur early.
AP dispatches report German forces rushing defenses inland 80 miles from the English Channel at the Oise and Alane rivers confluence. Also in Washington: Rep Curtis drafts 40 hour week bill and draft deferment limits. Sen Guffey says no tradition bars a fourth term. American shipyards deliver 1,730,500 merchant ships.
Lt Col Elliott Roosevelt denounces critiques of Franklin and James Roosevelt’s service in a North Africa letter. He defends their combat roles, cites James Roosevelt’s Navy Cross, and urges critics to stop politicizing the war. The affair was aired on the House floor with Rep Lambertson involved.
A Royal Air Force officer was killed and an American aviation student was injured when their training aircraft crashed near Columbia. The officer’s name was not released pending relatives’ notification. The American student was Sergeant Peter J DeCicto of the Bronx, New York. The crash occurred during a routine training flight. a board of Air Forces officers will determine the cause.
Senate Military Committee reports 1943 crop prospects are grim and labor deferment urged. It calls for delaying farm workers' enlistment through year end and criticizes draft-board administration as red tape ridden. Agriculture Secretary Wickard warns of belt tightening due to food shortages.
Soviet forces under Semeon Timoshenko press from Rehev toward Velikie Luki and Moscow area. Allied communiques report Southwest Pacific air forces destroyed a Japanese convoy of 22 ships off New Guinea. London AP reports RAF bombers struck targets in western Germany for the ninth night in a row, with the Air Ministry confirming one plane missing and mines laid in enemy waters. The communique gave no exact targets but indicated heavy industry likely in the Ruhr valley.
OWI probes so called leaks in news while Alabama faces new OPA price orders to curb high milk costs. The plan divides the state into two price zones excluding Jefferson Lee Mobile and Russell counties where prices stay, and affects buttermilk chocolate milk and other flavored milks. Mrs Welle Foy Bijiama of Atlanta died early today at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Funeral arrangements to be announced. Survived by daughter Mire Watater Thomas of Cucamonga California two brothers J D Foy of Dothan and Rumphrey Foy of Bufala, and a later Mrs J M Smith of Kufaws. Mrs Williams, former Doth resident, wed hers for more than 25 years.
