Salary laws reshape Houston County offices in 1847
The Houston County salary act enforces fixed annual pay for key officials starting January 1847, with probate judge 6000 dollars, sheriff 4800, circuit court clerk 4000, and chancery register 2700 plus county-funded clerks and allowances. Tax assessor and tax collector keep fee-based pay for now, extending two more years, while a constitutional amendment may shift them to salaries.

County moves to tie official salaries to services
The plan shifts county officials to a fee based system tied to services for taxpaying residents. It promises savings and funds directed to county operations, while asserting salaries reflect service value and fees fund government needs. Praise is given to former Representative Major W. G. Hardwick, successor Alto V. Lee, and Senator Mt. W. Espy for backing the change.
