His family reports he sailed from Ashford 1 October 194%, landed on Guadal, served May 11 1942 to October 1944, then returned, having been a tractor farmer before enlisting.
Southeast Alabama Council reports two six week summer camp periods at Camp Rotary. Scout Executive Cooke says reservations are received daily and urges those not yet mailed to choose the first period for best conditions. About sixty five Scouts are registered per period with Troops Brundidge 34 Troy 2 Samson 38 listed among participants.
L. G. Nichols FSA supervisor for Houston County leaves for induction in the Navy this week. Miss Mary B. Arant the county home management supervisor will serve as acting supervisor until a new appointee is named.
Fire at the Yoval Cafe on North Oates Street last night caused heavy damage to the kitchen when a motor short circuited and flames spread through the rear of the building. The blaze was discovered by Mrs. W. C. Fenn near 205 West Tray Street, close to the cafe, and Barney Adams, owner of the cafe, reported. Firemen forced their way through the front door to extinguish the flames as woodwork and food in the kitchen were damaged. extent of damage not available.
Four Houston County residents were rounded up by Federal State and county officers during the weekend on prohibition law violations. Three Black individuals Buddie Brachins James Brewer and Laura Mcleod were arrested Saturday night by agents Lake Burdick and W S Allsup along with Sheriff’s investigator Clayton Adams for corn mash and homebrew. J T Franklin was later arrested with about a pint of Megal whiskey. The sheriff’s office logged 29 cases in 48 hours with additional counts of public drunkenness and vagrancy recorded.
ATLANTA RP Intensive recruiting starts today in the Southeast to supply 1300 of 15000 men needed to repair battle damaged Navy ships in Pacific coast yards. Millard B Lasseter regional director of the War Manpower Commission urges several thousand skilled shipyard workers released by maritime yards to volunteer. Electricians, coppersmiths, machinists, pipefitters, riggers, sheet metal workers, instrument repair men, ordnance men and boilermakers are among those needed.
Governor Arnall suspends license and registration fees on out of state trucks to aid moving a bumper Georgia peach crop. The order, expiring July 15, follows Agriculture Commissioner Linder's recommendation saying Georgia trucks cannot handle the traffic.
City police report a quiet weekend with 28 people taken into custody for minor offenses. Half were for drunkenness. Of 28 cases, 14 charged drunkenness, six disorderly conduct, four drunkenness and disorderly conduct, and one each for vagrancy speeding assault and battery drunkenness and petit larceny.
Student officers of the Mexican Air Forces stationed at Napier Field were honored Saturday at a 4 to 8 p.m. reception and tea dance held at the officers club. Colonel Daly and Mrs. Daly, Colonel Stewart and Mrs. Stewart, and Lt. Luis Amezcua of the Mexican Air Forces greeted the guests and their wives. Refreshments included punch iced cakes and party sandwiches served by Napier Field officers wives club. Music by the Napier Field Air Liners featured Mexican tunes and decorations highlighted a Mexican motif with crossed Mexican and American flags.
Private Hubert L. Henderson of the Marine Corps dislocated his left shoulder during action on Okinawa May 8. His wife, residing at 508 Marbury Street, Dothan, has been notified. Henderson enlisted April 1, 1944 and went overseas November 29, 1944.
The Purple Heart is awarded to James Clemit Phillips ship's cook first class U S Navy son of Agr and Mrs M D Phillips of Slocomb Toute One. He was wounded in action May 4 and has served over four years with overseas service since May 1944.
