Air Speed Record Winner Repaid In Prestige
Washington says the cost of setting world speed records is high but the prestige and lessons learned reward the effort. The DP 80 project, backed by Lockheed and DP-80 engineers, cost at least 1.7 million dollars and yielded a record speed of 23.8 miles per hour. The program produced new insights for commercial and military aviation, including potential uses for the reconnaissance version of the PBO.
