Old sailing ships still haul cargo on global routes though speeds lag behind modern vessels. The Treasury Bureau notes 60 American sailers over 500 tons and 100 to 150 foreign windjammers remain in service, with only three large square riggers left in American waters. The Star of India, Pacific Queen, and Scottish Lady are among the notable ships, with Star of India sailing scientific expeditions for San Diego. Captain Gustaf Erikson of Finland faced severe losses during the war era.
