Pumps to aid Grand Coulee irrigation project

Six large pumps forming a battery will be installed on a rock shelf canyon site upstream from the dam. Each pump stands about 50 feet high with motor installations. Ten pumps operating 18 minutes could pump enough water for all U.S. residents. First units due early 1948, others later that year. A reduced-scale model will be built for hydraulic tests to approve the designs. The pumps are part of the Columbia Basin Project to irrigate 1 million acres and generate power, flood control, and extend irrigation to 400,000 acres by 1950 or 1951 after wartime suspension. Grand Coulee, nearly finished in 1942, boosted war power output.
