Hearing seeks Patterson answers on wartime contracts
Members press War Secretary Patterson for explanations of how and why the Ilingis combine won more than 78 million dollars in war contracts and why one plant earned the Army Navy E award despite objections from the Chicago ordnance office. Renegotiation figures show 3.52 million dollars in excessive profits on renegotiable business among five firms, including Erie Basin. The inquiry turns to renegotiation figures after testimony alleging timber deal profits and May’s alleged profits. May denies profiting and criticizes the proceedings as Gestapo tactics as constitutional questions loom over Senate subpoenas. Senator Ferguson cites constitutional immunity for members of Congress, complicating possible testimony.
