Meadows Seeks $1800 Average Pay For Alabama Teachers

Alabama State School Superintendent A R Meadows said he will ask the 1947 Legislature to raise the average teacher salary to 1800 dollars a year. He plans to draft a two year budget requesting funds for 500 new teachers, higher bus transportation and operating costs, janitors and maintenance. He estimates the move would require about 70 million dollars yearly to lift 20 000 teachers to 1800 and 400 thousand for 500 new teachers at 1200 plus additional transportation and operating funds. The current public school budget and future needs are to be announced as part of the state’s largest educational budget in history.
