Sam Byrd edged Nelson by three strokes to win the Texas Open, finishing 16 under par after a final round dominated by Byrd’s birdie storm. Lord Byron led early but Byrd’s eight-birdie stretch through holes 8 to 15 sealed the victory as Nelson faltered on No 14. Corpus Christi Open begins Friday.
Mrs Ellen Stokes 85 wife of the late State Senator C A Stokes died at her Ozark home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held today. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Methodist church. Survived by several nieces and nephews.
Fort Benning Georgia announced the execution of John J. O Connor an 18 year old from Morpeth Langland New York for the fatal shooting of a soldier during guard duty. Court martial found him guilty and he was hanged after being captured following the alleged assault. Civilians and military police had arrested O Connor days earlier in South Carolina.
Houston County health department figures show white births increased last year while Negro births declined. White births totaled 474 males and 474 females, up from 443 males and 443 females in 1943, with 34 stillbirths reported for the year 14.
Two Florida youths Charles Fullwood and Harry Quick escaped Autauga County Jail in Prattvile after assaulting a jailer and taking keys. Both teens, 17 and 15, were arrested in Clanton on burglary and grand larceny charges and had confessed to multiple burglaries in Florida and Alabama. They were escorted back to Prattvile to face new charges.
Col. Edrohn A. Halsey, secretary of the Senate, died at age 63 in Washington from a heart ailment during preparations for President Roosevelt's fourth term inauguration. An implant of the Senate since 1807 and secretary since 1933, he had a recent heart attack and was ordered to bed after the ceremony. He was a native of Tyson River, Virginia.

Chairman Bailey and 14 members who opposed Wallace discuss reporting the nomination, but timing remains unclear as Hailey’s position is unresolved and the bill’s report is not yet ready.

Reports from Moscow spoke of reinforcements and street fighting in Konigsberg as Petrov’s Fourth Ukraine Army pushed inland.
Mrs. W R Clark, 75, died at her Pinckard home after weeks of illness. She lived in Pinckard 37 years, was a Pinckard Baptist Church member. Survived by two sons W H Clark and J L Clark, a daughter Mrs J C Wright, a brother, two sisters, and four grandchildren. Sergeant Thomas David Smith 22 of Malvern was killed in action in Belgium January 6. A radio operator and technician fourth grade, he enlisted March 23, 1940 and served at Fort Benning before deploying overseas in July 1942. He fought in North Africa Sicily and Italy and later served in Germany with the Second Armored Division after landing crews in Normandy.
Dothan area pupils from Highland School collected over 29,000 pounds of scrap paper in a drive sponsored by the Dothan Exchange Club. The effort was organized as a contest between boys and girls to heighten participation and drive engagement.

Probate Judge Saxon P Poyner has Brill’s fever and has been away from the office recently, now confined at home.

Funeral services for Henry Tamber, 47, of 155 Raurosd Avenue, who died Sunday morning in a Dothan hospital of self-inflicted wounds, were conducted Sunday at 10 am at Johnson and Wilkerson chapel. The Wood infant died at the parents home on Way Street near Waycro Ward-Wilson Funeral Home was handling arrangements with surviving family including Joes and Sands Gail Wood, Mrs. O. Wood, Archie Varnadoe, and other grandparents. The funeral services were set for tonight at the Ward-Wilson Funeral Home.
B C Cameron of Ashford route one died in a local hospital after a long illness. He was a resident of Ashford and a member of Union Baptist Church. Funeral services were held at 3 p m at Hi Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife and two daughters Mrs Bernice Brinks and Mrs Lois Hasty of Winter Garden Florida, a brother Anguish Cameron of Auburndale Florida. Active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed. Ward Wilson Funeral Home handled arrangements.
City and county police officers had a busy weekend with over 50 people taken into custody in 48 hours. Most bookings were for public drunkenness. 59 arrests included 16 drunkenness charges. Other cases involved disorderly conduct and assault and battery among city arrests. the sheriff’s office logged 15 arrests, all for public drunkenness.
