Farmers in Houston County are among the few in the Cotton Belt to be offered Federal Crop Insurance on ibur cotton in 1948. Coverage is limited to one level and premium is 12 pounds per acre. The program is in experimental status and only five Alabama counties and 56 Cotton Belt counties participate. In 1947 Houston County had 735 contracts, with nearly 400 indemnity payments due to rains and pests. Two insurance types, yield and dollar insurance, will be offered under amended authority.

Boy Shot To Death By Dog At Jasper
In Jasper Alabama a 14 year old boy, Burford Kilgore, died after a rifle discharged when a hunting party rested. The coroner said a dog knocked the gun to the ground causing the accidental shooting. Kilgore died after being treated at a local hospital.

Russian shot wounds American in Berlin zone dispute
In Berlin early today a Russian soldier shot an American lieutenant in the shoulder in the American sector. Lt. Fred Heuhemann of Chicago was reported not seriously wounded. The incident occurred near Kreuzzerg district as he turned on a flashlight. A Russian fired three shots. the third wounded the officer. Russian forces halted a British military train at 2 pm and detained it until nightfall. British passengers were moved to another train. The British protest was delivered without a reply. About 20 Germans on the train were released or returned to Berlin.

Man Held In Florida In Theft Of Rehoboth Sewing Machines
A man named C. Smith was arrested by Lincoln County officers in Florida in connection with the theft of several sewing machines from Rehoboth High School. Police say Smith refused voluntary return, extradition proceedings begun, and he allegedly tried to dispose of one machine. Two electric and three manual sewing machines were reported stolen from the Rehoboth High School home economics department over a weekend two weeks earlier.
