GOP leaders mobilize to slash Truman budget with Taft proposing up to 3 billion in reductions while Bridges resists pledges. Taber mocks arithmetic as Truman seeks 1.32 billion more for operations and relief amid probes of tax refunds and Army relief funds.
In the following week the United States Department of Agriculture bought 23,963,000 bushels of wheat, far above the 6,500,000 bushels average for the prior six weeks. That week it purchased 37,000,000 pounds of flour versus 13,000,000 pounds average. The next week the USDA bought 1,259,000 bushels of oats, the first oats purchase in 18 weeks, and grain prices rose sharply.
Federal State Market News reports cattle week receipts about 2600 with slow Friday trade on top grades. Medium and better cattle barely steady to steady with canners and cutters uneven but mostly steady to higher. Week totals show varied beef cow and calf prices, hogs weaker to mostly lower, with assorted weights listing multiple price ranges and steady to higher on select vealers.
A limited number of physically qualified ex service men previously rejected for enlistment will be accepted in the Army for unassigned duty. Capt J J Krause of the Dothan recruiting station reported the Army issued a special ruling for a quota of veterans unable to reenlist. Interested ex-service men should contact recruiting officials in the post office building.

Mrs Minnie Lee Kirkland sixty five of Midland City route two died Thursday morning in a Tuscaloosa Hospital after a long illness. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Virginia Tate and Mrs Dorothy Harrison two brothers Otho Kirkland and Bill Kirkland a sister Mrs Lela McLendon and a granddaughter. The funeral will be at 32 p m Sunday from the Antioch Church near Slocomb with interment in the church cemetery. Holman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Montgomery AP reports Alabama state expenditures for 1946 47 surpassed the prior year by more than 46 million. Net receipts rose about 30 million, with disbursements totaling 195 137 972 compared with 148 208 147 a year earlier. Last year’s receipts were 183 750 334 versus 152 791 192 in 1945 46.

A Dothan Branch laboratory confirmed the year's first rabies in a fox head found after it attacked a Negro child in Henry County near Abbeville. The head tested positive. the child had not been bitten or scratched, and the animal was killed.
Three women arrested on Wednesday for fortune telling were released after paying fines of 52 and 102 dollars and receiving suspended six month sentences. Marie Stephens, 30, pleaded guilty to telling fortunes for reward and was fined 102 dollars. Elizabeth Stanley, 27, and Norma Gallo, 41, pleaded guilty to vagrancy and were fined 52 dollars each. The Alabama group reports that a diet without choline killed rat strains in weeks while little choline extended life but caused liver lumps later identified as cancer.
