Athletic 4F Draft Talk Spurs Major League Support
Defense Secretary George Mershall signals 4F status may lead to selective service during the present emergency with athletes possibly serving in non combat roles. House Armed Services Committee heard that if 4F draft proceeds it would affect athletes and workers from all walks of life, with MLB and NFL figures backing the plan. Some players like Erv Palica have passed new exams and expect induction. others such as Mickey Mantle and Cass Michaels could face limited service, while several Reds pitchers and Cardinals players remain 4F or near draft age.
