Dre-Marital Blood Tests Now Required By Thirty-Six States

Chicago dispatch reports prospective brides and grooms in 36 states must undergo venereal disease blood testing before marriage, with Louisiana and Texas requiring only the groom to take the test. Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Minnesota, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Maryland have no test laws. Connecticut first enacted the measure in 1935, followed by Oregon, Illinois, Virginia, Michigan, and New Hampshire two years later. The U.S. Public Health Service estimates about 310,000 tests per year, crediting the tests with uncovering thousands of syphilis cases and reducing infant deaths. Legislative councils expand planning bodies in several states as new government reforms spread nationwide.
