Tax Sucessions Coolly Received By Francis M Lemay
Washington AP Capitol Hill greeted President Truman's hint of higher taxes for individuals earning six thousand dollars a year with a cool reception. Lawmakers push for spending cuts rather than tax increases to balance the budget while Truman seeks four billion in new taxes, mostly from corporations. He suggested a middle bracket beginning around four thousand to twenty five thousand dollars annually, noting a six thousand dollar earner might want the bracket higher. The discussion occurs as Congress debates trimming the record 41.858 billion dollar peacetime budget for the new fiscal year. Senator Byrd urged economy to avoid new taxes, while Rep Cannon promised sizable reductions, especially in armed services spending. Turn to No. 1 on Page.
